The Clarence Herbert Wade Family

     Clarence Herbert Wade was born May 12, 1893 on a homestead just east of Manchester, S.D.  His parents were Isaac Marvilla and Mina Marie Smith Wade.  He had one sister and two brothers.  As a child, he lived two years in Shubel, Oregon. 

     On May 11, 1918, Herb enlisted in the Navy.   He completed four weeks of training at Camp Dewey, the Great Lakes naval training station.  He spent twelve months in the war zone, during WWI, on the W.S.S. Manley and U.S.S. Albatross.  He was stationed at Queenstown, Ireland and was discharged June 12, 1919. 

     Herb married Mary Catherine Myers, on June 27, 1922.  They farmed in the DeSmet until 1933.  In April, 1933, they moved with their boys to Rapid City, making their home there for five and a half years.  Herb worked at the South Dakota Cement plant.  In the fall of 1938, they returned to farm in the DeSmet area until retiring in 1957, when they moved into town. 

     Herb became ill and spent 22 days  at the local hospital and then another 15 days at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls.  He died June 17, 1965,  at the age of 72, of liver cancer. 

     Mary Catherine Myers Wade was born November 19, 1901 to Samuel Blair and Anna Augusta Boveia Myers at their farm north of DeSmet.  She had six brothers.  Her mother died when she was quite young and Mary had to take over the household duties. 

          Children of Clarence Herbert and Mary Catherine Wade:

          1.  Herbert Blair Wade, born October 1, 1925 and died Feb. 2, 1944 in a hunting accident, he was a senior in high school at the time.

          2.  Roy Ellis Wade, born January 24, 1930, at the Sprague Hospital in Huron, S.D.
