Laura Ingalls Wilder's Birthday Celebration February 5, 2009

Ring, Ring, Ring

The school day begins, as Mrs. Wienbar rings the bell.

History in a trunk

We gathered around the trunk and watched and listened while Mrs. Wienbar showed us things and photos from the past and talked about them.

Our lessons

Mrs. Wienbar gave each of us an old textbook. We got to see what children of the past studied. We each had an assignment, then we presented our lesson in front of the class.

Special Guest

Marlin Clendening visited our classroom and brought along an old washer and sausage stuffer. He talked about the pioneers of the past. He also showed us how the sausage stuffer worked.

Crochet Lessons

Mrs. Wienbar taught us how to crochet. Some of us already knew how. Some of us wanted to learn how to knit!

Grinding Wheat

We poured wheat into the hopper and closed the little door. Then we turned the handle around and around. It took all afternoon to grind a cup of flour!

Twisting Hay

We practiced twisting hay into sticks. Just like Laura did during the Long Winter. It was hard work.

Churning Butter

We pour cream into the butter churn, then we took turns churning. At first, the handle was easy to turn, then as the butter fat and butter milk began to separate, it became harder to turn.

Making Rope

We wound twine onto the rope maker and each one of us made a rope. That's 21 of us! It was hard work, but one of our favorite activities.

Corncob Dolls

We pulled the dried husks off the corn cobs. We took off any remaining kernels of corn. Then we wrapped a fabric blanket around the cob and tied it with yarn. Our dolls were just like Laura's first doll when she was a little girl back in the Big Woods.

Covered Wagons

We made our covered wagons out of a milk carton cut in half, colored paper, and cardboard. Brass fasteners held on the cardboard wheels. Laura traveled many places in a covered wagon.

Snack

We spread our fresh butter onto crackers for a good snack. Yum!

Special Helpers

We would like to thank the moms and grandmas that helped us with all our activities throughout the day. We couldn't have done it without you!

At the end of the day, Mrs. Wienbar asked us what we liked best about the day. It was so hard to choose, many of us said, "Everything!"
